Fuengirola is the closest of our destinations to Málaga Airport and the first real town once the road turns west. It is not a resort that empties in October: a dense seaside town of flats rather than gated estates, with a market and a long seafront promenade.
The people who come are a mixed lot: families with small children and too much luggage, couples returning to the same rented flat for the tenth year, and a large resident foreign community, Finnish, British and Scandinavian, with the shops and Finnish school that come with it.
The drive is short; the last two minutes rarely are. Flats sit in blocks that look identical from the pavement, the old centre is half pedestrianised, and in August the seafront moves at walking pace.
Where we drop you in Fuengirola
- The centre and Plaza de la Constitución
- The square and its church are the middle of the old town. The streets around are narrow, one way and partly pedestrian, so a car gets within a street of most doors.
- The marina
- At the western end of the seafront, below the castle hill. On summer evenings the approach fills up, and stopping outside beats driving in.
- Los Boliches
- Just east of the centre and in practice part of it, with its own station and beach, and the fishing-quarter history behind the Virgen del Carmen celebrations in July.
- Torreblanca
- Further east and uphill: the station and old village sit well above the seafront, so say whether you are by the beach or on the hill.
- Carvajal
- The eastern edge, low rise and quieter, on the Benalmádena boundary. Some addresses are in the neighbouring town, and the station is a climb up from the sand.
- Sohail Castle and the fairground
- The castle stands above the river mouth, with the fairground and open-air concert site below. Roads around it close during the October fair and on concert nights.
- Miramar and the upper town
- Back from the beach, on the slopes below the coast road: residential blocks, supermarkets, no station nearby, which is why people here book a car.
Arriving at Málaga Airport
Málaga has three terminals, T1, T2 and T3, joined in one building. Wherever you land, you collect your bags and come out through the arrivals hall on the ground floor of T3. From outside the Schengen area, passport control decides how long that takes.
The road out leads onto the A-7 coast motorway westbound. Being our shortest run, Fuengirola is almost always driven that way, past Torremolinos and Benalmádena. The inland AP-7 toll road is the alternative when the coast road is loaded.
There is a train too. The C-1 runs from a station beside the terminal to Fuengirola, calling at Carvajal, Torreblanca and Los Boliches, and for some travellers it is the better option. It does not run through the small hours, and only helps if your flat is near a station. Pushchairs, several cases, night landings and hillside addresses are the usual reasons for a car.

The coast road in summer
From late June to early September the run through Torremolinos and Benalmádena is slow, and so is the seafront. The price is fixed at booking, so traffic costs you nothing.
Child seats have to be asked for
Add them when you book, with the children's ages, so the job goes to a driver who carries them. They cannot be arranged at the kerb.
Landing in the middle of the night
Many flights land long after the trains have stopped. We follow your flight number and move the pick-up if it arrives late, and the driver messages you when he sets off.
A street name is not an address here
Rented flats sit in blocks that are hard to tell apart. Send the block name, the entrance number and a mobile that works in Spain.
Fair week and patron saint days
The Feria del Rosario fills the fairground and much of the centre in early October, and on 16 July the Virgen del Carmen procession closes streets around Los Boliches.
Questions people ask
How long does the Málaga Airport to Fuengirola transfer take?
Around 30 minutes in normal traffic. In July and August, or on a Friday evening, allow a little more.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
We track your flight number, so your driver adjusts the pick-up time and waits for you. A delayed flight costs you nothing extra.
Where do I meet my driver?
In the arrivals hall, once you are through. Your driver holds a sign with your name, and we also email you their phone number.
Is the price per person or per car?
Per car. The price you see covers the whole vehicle, your luggage and any tolls.
Can I cancel?
Yes, free of charge up to 24 hours before pick-up. The full amount goes back to the same card.
Do you have child seats?
Yes. Add them when you book and we assign a driver who carries them, at no extra cost.
Is the train from the airport not easier than a transfer?
For some people, yes. Light luggage, a daytime arrival and a flat near Fuengirola, Los Boliches, Torreblanca or Carvajal make the C-1 hard to beat. It stops making sense with cases and children, at night, or when the climb from the station is the hard part.
We land after midnight. Will anyone be there?
Yes. Night arrivals are normal here and the booking follows your flight, not office hours. We watch the flight, move the pick-up if it lands late, and your driver tells you when he is on his way.
Can you drop us at the door in the old town?
Usually close to it, not always at it. The streets around Plaza de la Constitución are narrow and partly pedestrian, so the stop may be the nearest corner a car reaches.
Our flat is in Carvajal. Is that Fuengirola or Benalmádena?
Carvajal sits on the boundary and letting agents use the name on both sides. Send the full address, not just the area, so the price covers the right place.
We are staying near Miramar, nowhere near a station. Is that a problem?
Not at all. It is where public transport stops being convenient, since the way up from the seafront is a climb with luggage.
